Honey is hailed for its many healing properties and medicinal benefits, but there is also a darker side to it. Raw honey is not heated or filtered and has been associated with certain health risks. You can enjoy the health benefits of raw honey, but you need to ensure that it comes from a safe source. Here are the dangers and mistakes of the natural sweetener that you must be wary of.
           1. Honey shows side effects with children below one year. There is a possibility
that kids of this age may experience food poisoning as there lies a risk of infant botulism. The rare disease is caused by the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum can varying degrees of paralysis.  Though, honey is safe for most adults and children over one year old when taken by mouth or when appropriately applied to the skin by adults.


            2. Heating of honey should be avoided as the process generates a particular chemical compound called Hydroxy methyl-furfural (HMF) that may damage the DNA.

           3. Eating too much honey may lead to stomach problems such as stomach cramps, bloating and diarrhea.

           4. Taking high dose of honey disturb the smooth function of small intestine that may lead to irregularities in nutrients absorbing.

          5.  There can be allergic reactions such as (itching, puffy skin and rash, tongue inflammation and wheezing, asthma, difficulty in swallowing, shortness of breath) in response to consumption of raw honey. Anaphylactic shock is a form of severe allergic reaction with symptoms of difficulty  breathing, low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, heart failure and possible death.

         6. Allergic patients should also avoid it as they may feel lung inflammation. Therefore, it should be taken after consultation of an expert.

         7.  Honey is unsafe when it is produced from the nectar of Rhododendrons and taken by mouth. This type of honey contains a toxin that may cause heart problems, low blood pressure, chest pain, as well as other serious heart problems.

         8. When honey is taken that produced from the nectar of Rhododendrons may lead to heart problems, chest pain and low blood pressure.

         9. Due to contaminants, honey may be avoided during pregnancy or by the breastfeeding mother. Stay on the safe side and avoid medicinal amounts and topical applications.

        10.  Honey should be avoided by the diabetic patients or it should be taken after the consultation of an expert.

        11. People who are suffering from bleeding related problems should avoid eating of honey.

        12.  Avoid honey if you are allergic to pollen. Honey, which is made from pollen, may cause allergic reactions.

        13. It may increase sugar levels in blood as it is totally deficient in fiber, which results in total absorption of sugar in blood that leads to diabetes.

        14. The eating of more and more honey may erode the enamel due to excessive sugary content. It is also the harbinger of acidophilic bacteria that causes cavities in teeth.

        15.  According to the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, honey may have grayanotoxins and can cause trouble if large amount of it is consumed. These are  chemicals that are toxic to your nervous system. Honey intoxication side-effects include weakness, dizziness, sweating, nausea, vomiting and a prickling sensation. Heart problems are another possible side-effect.

        16.  There is a risk that honey can become contaminated with germs from plants and bees. The issue of contamination is also there during collection, production and processing. Most of the harmful organisms cannot survive or reproduce, but bacteria that reproduce using spores may remain.
